Preparing for Christmas
My wife and I started our Christmas preparation with a search for a real tree this year. This is the first live tree we have had in many years. It was a special and exciting adventure for us as we began to anticipate time with family and friends and to consider the celebration of our Saviors birth.
Like us, maybe you are still a long way from being ready for Christmas. There are still some decorations to put up, gifts to buy, and cards to send. While we are planning all of this, it might be a good time to ask if we have prepared ourselves for Jesus. While our homes and our calendars might reflect that we are ready Christmas, we need to ask whether or not our lives reflect a readiness for Christmas?
To properly decorate we need to clean up first. What sins have we struggled with lately? We must confess them before God and enjoy the cleansing of His forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Is there anyone we need to make things right with? We are not prepared for God if we have an unresolved problem with another (Matthew 5:23-24).
Now we are ready to decorate. Let’s adorn our lives these days leading up to Christmas with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are beautiful decorations that people will drive by to see.
We always put up lots of lights at this time. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). What lights will we put up around our lives, our families and friendships?
Decorations sure have a lot to do with setting a mood for Christmas. Which decorations will you spend the most time on this Christmas? Let’s try to remember who we are decorating for and set a good mood for Christmas.
