Baggage, Bruises and Blind Spots

by Terry Lanford on January 26th, 2019

My mentor in ministry, Pastor Mike Hamlet, had to sometimes remind me, particularly when I was being judgmental about what I deemed strange behavior in others, that everyone has baggage. It is there, we just don’t always see it. All of us have been hurt, bruised and scarred by the sin of someone else. We have also hurt others by our own sin. Over the years I have also come to realize that each of us has struggled with blind spots. We all have had flaws that others could see but we couldn’t see in ourselves. Acknowledging these painful realities helps us to rejoice greatly in three awesome promises of Jesus who is the answer to these struggles.

Have Baggage?
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV).

Bruises?
“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench . . .” Matthew 12:20 (ESV).

Blind Spots?
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” John 8:12 (ESV).

In Jesus we find rest for our souls. Only in Him, can His children find love, mercy and light.
